Nigel Mansell always used to say that the strong support of a Silverstone crowd would spur him to find an extra tenth or two. Damon succeeded him as the home hero, and the atmosphere was always electric there during his era.

“There are Johnny Herbert and David Coulthard ags in there, too. All the British drivers get tremendous support at Silverstone, and that goes right the way back to when my dad was racing. And Nigel probably scooped the lot with his ‘Barmy Army’. You try to give as much as you can while having a job to do as well. We created a range of merchandise that people still turn up wearing today. Those things will be 20 years old now, so they were obviously well made.”
