PHANTOM TRAFFIC JAMS

Fast Ford - - What's New -

Phantom jams are the scourge of modern traffic – motorway drivers needlessly tapping their brakes, causing the cars behind them to brake, setting off a chain reaction that leads to a pointless jam further down the line.

Ford are using technology to combat this; along with researchers from Vanderbilt University, Tennessee, they’ve demonstrated that Adaptive Cruise Control, as offered on everything from the Fiesta to the Transit, can mitigate or even prevent phantom jams – with cars keeping pace evenly with those in front, unnecessary braking is avoided, and thus people following are less likely to overreact. Simple, but effective.
