Getting on target

We asked a range of Field & Game Australia members to reveal the chokes and loads they use for Australian Simulated Field competition and whether they change up between stands.

Field and Game - - FGA FORUM -

Nicholas Guerra — Cobram Field & Game What is your “go to” or “favourite” load, brand, shot weight and shot size?

I use Gambore Blue Diamonds 28 gr 7.5 all of the time. This only differs if I can't get them in 7.5s, then I will go to the 8s. If I shoot steel, then I would use the Gambore Black Gold steel.

Do you change loads between targets/stands, if so when and why?

No, I like to stick with the same load throughout the shoot. I believe that once you are confident in one shell on longer/tougher targets then just stick with it and use it on all targets.

Do you change load weights, i.e. 28 g, 32 g and 36 g, if so, when and why??

No, as mentioned above I just use the same throughout.

What chokes do you use — constriction, brand, etc?

I use Modified and Improved Modified constriction, in the extended Briley chokes that come standard with the Blaser F3 Supersport.

Do you change chokes between stands, if so, when and why?

No, similar to the cartridges, I just like to stick with the same chokes throughout. >>

What is your “go to” or “favourite” load, brand, shot weight and shot size?

GB Prius 28 g 7.5.

Do you change loads between targets/ stands, if so when and why?

No, I don't change, one shell for everything.

Do you change load weights, i.e. 28 g, 32 g and 36 g, if so, when and why??

No I don't change, 28 g for everything except for duck hunting where I use 32g for a bit more knock down power and it patterns well in my gun.

What chokes do you use — constriction, brand, etc??

I use Modified and Improved Modified Briley chokes.

Do you change chokes between stands, if so, when and why??

No, I never change my chokes.

Anthony Panetta — Port Phillip Field & Game

What is your “go to” or “favourite” load, brand, shot weight and shot size?

Winchester AA 28 gm light handicap in 8 and 7.5 is my go to load when the chips are down!

Do you change loads between targets/ stands, if so when and why?

Yes I certainly do. Rabbits always get a 7.5 just because of their construction, as they are a bit harder and thicker. Battues get a 8 for obvious reasons, no matter how far away they are! Anything that shows belly up to 40 m can be shot with an 8. Targets presented on edge or where you are shooting at the top of the clay further than 30 m will be 7.5s all day long.

Do you change load weights, i.e. 28 g, 32 g and 36 g, if so, when and why??

No, I don't shoot anything other than 28 gm cartridges. When hunting that would be a different story …

What chokes do you use — constriction, brand, etc??

My most popular constrictions are 17 and 22 thou, (It's probably more superstitious than scientific) so a bit either side of Modified choke. I find with my ammo choices I have most situations covered with these chokes.

Do you change chokes between stands, if so, when and why??

If I see an advantage, I definitely will change chokes. On very close targets (under 15 m) I will use a Cylinder choke, and obviously I will use a Full choke on extreme range targets (50 m +)

Jack Gibbs — Ballarat Field & Game

What is your “go to” or “favourite” load, brand, shot weight and shot size?

My favourite shell to use would have to be the Winchester Super Sport 28 g 1350 8's

Do you change loads between targets/ stands, if so when and why?

No, I use one shell only to stop me having a choice whether or not I can hit a target with one shell or another.

Do you change load weights, i.e. 28 g, 32 g and 36 g, if so, when and why??

No, I always stick to the same 28 g loads.

What chokes do you use — constriction, brand, etc??

I use Modified and Improved Modified because I like a tight pattern to break targets hard, which gives you better confidence watching them break well rather than chipping the target.

Do you change chokes between stands, if so, when and why??

No, I keep my chokes the same to minimize factors.
