Motorist flees as car catches fire
A MOTORIST is lucky to have escaped unscathed after his car burst into flames on Main St.
Witnesses described the driver fleeing his Holden Commodore moments before the blaze ignited about 4.30pm in Pialba yesterday.
The vehicle’s driver reported seeing smoke coming from the dashboard before it caught fire.
Firefighters, police and Ergon Energy crews responded to the incident and quickly brought the fire under control.
Main St was closed between Pialba Place and Torquay Rd while emergency services monitored the scene.
No-one was injured from the incident.
A spokesman from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said the crews donned breathing apparatus to combat the fire.
Firefighters used a dry-powder extinguisher to prevent fuel leakage
“At one point with the extinguishment, it was difficult with the fuel tank that had been breached,” the spokesman said.
“We’re very thankful one occupant of the vehicle was able to get out in time.”
The cause of the fire is unknown.
A nearby shopkeeper reported hearing a loud bang along Main St when the incident occurred.
Witnesses were quick to capture the fire on video as smoke quickly spread into the nearby suburbs.
Smoke from the fire was visible from several kilometres away.
