Re­pairs start on worst of Walker St

STAGE one of re­pairs to one of the re­gion’s worst roads will be­gin next week.

Fraser Coast Coun­cil­lor De­nis Chap­man con­firmed the project in Walker St, Mary­bor­ough was due to start on Mon­day with a tem­po­rary lane clo­sure in place.

"A sin­gle lane will al­low for west­bound traf­fic only. All east­bound traf­fic will be de­toured via Rex Street, Aberdeen Av­enue and Nep­tune Street," Cr Chap­man said.

The re­build­ing of road pave­ment, kerb and chan­nel, storm-wa­ter drainage and con­crete foot­path be­tween Steven­son and Nep­tune streets will be com­pleted by Her­vey Bay’s SGQ Pty Ltd.

SGQ Pty Ltd will also com­plete Stage 3B of the Main Street project in Her­vey Bay, which is ex­pected to start in early Fe­bru­ary and fin­ish at the end of April.

Cr Chap­man said the to­tal costs for these projects are about $1.2 mil­lion for Main Street and $1.3 mil­lion for Walker Street.

"These projects be­ing awarded to a Fraser Coast com­pany are ex­am­ples of Coun­cil’s com­mit­ment to sup­port­ing lo­cal busi­nesses when­ever pos­si­ble; $52.5 mil­lion of Coun­cil’s in­fra­struc­ture bud­get for last year to Novem­ber was al­lo­cated to lo­cal con­trac­tors."

SGQ Pty Ltd has also worked in other Coun­cil projects in­clud­ing the Drury Lane Ex­ten­sion, Raward Road Open Chan­nel Up­grade, the Mary­bor­ough CBD Flood Re­silience Project, Ole­an­der Av­enue Re­con­struc­tion Stage 2 and the Hunter Street drainage up­grade.
