MEET your latest Local Sports Stars, plus catch up on all the weekend’s football, basketball and soccer.

SOMETIMES the true measure of a great sportsperson is the effort they put in off the field as well as on it, a philosophy Fremantle Hockey Club’s J9/10 A Promotion Boys have wholeheartedly adopted.

The group of years 9 and 10 students could be doing the typical teenage thing of locking themselves in their room and playing video games but instead have committed themselves to their sport as players, mentors and volunteers.

Fremantle Hockey Club juniors vice president Lee Abbott said the boys stood out because of these efforts.

“They just want to play the game and have fun doing it; it really doesn't matter to them that they are not winning games but they are improving on the field, supporting their mates and accepting of everyone's differences,” she said.

“Four of the boys regularly umpire the young players each week, giving up their own time on nontraining nights to help out the younger club members and coaches.

“One will come down to assist at

the fundraising barbecue on a Saturday morning and another happily assists at the club functions.

“What really helps them give back to the club is the attitude of their coach Liam Spencer who leads by example; the positive role modelling that he gives the boys is priceless and ultimately that is the greatest gift.”

Abbott has nominated the team for Community Newspaper Group’s Local Sports Stars competition in the Young Sporting Spirit-Team category for the sportsmanship and community spirit they show both on and off the field.
