Lakeside women lord it over Hawks
LAKESIDE Lightning’s women have handed ladder-leading Perry Lakes Hawks their second loss of the season in emphatic style on Saturday night.
The 89-67 win came on the back of a huge game from imports Ali Schwagmeyer and Sydnee Fipps, who scored 22 and 20 points respectively.
The win helps Lakeside secure third spot on the ladder with just one game to go before finals.
Lakeside’s men also took the points in their match up against Perry Lakes, escaping with a 99-98 win.
Import Devon Atkinson sunk a massive five from five from beyond the arc on his way to 19 points, while fellow American James Padgett scored seven three-pointers himself and top scored with 31 points.
The seventh-placed Cockburn Cougars women have done enough to secure a finals berth with a 68-57 away win against East Perth. Kersten Mitchell again dominated in the paint, sinking 30 points.
The Cougar men went two from two to place them in equal fourth with Perth and the South West Slammers but sitting in sixth on percentage.
They kicked it off on Saturday night with a 95-88 away win against East Perth before returning home the next night to beat Geraldton 116-96.
Lochlan Cummings did the damage on Saturday night with 23 points, while Jalen Billups also netted 21.
Cummings backed up his performance on Sunday night, destroying Geraldton with a 41-point haul.
In the final round of the season Lakeside’s women take on Willetton from 6.30pm July 28 at the Lakeside Recreation Centre, while the men tip off against the Tigers right after at 8.30pm.
Cockburn’s women will host Kalamunda from 6.30pm July 28, with the men up against the Suns from 8.30pm.
