Fishing ban at wreck

Fremantle Gazette - - OPINION -

FISHING around the wreck of the Omeo in North Coogee could land anglers a fine of up to $5000 after a no-fishing zone came into effect last week.

With a boating ban already in place at the popular dive trail site, the new no-fishing zone is expected to reduce the chance of injury to divers exploring the 112-year-old wreck.

The ban will also include the City of Cockburn’s artificial reef modules.

Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly said the prohibition had the support of Recfishwest and the WA Fishing Industry Council.

“The Omeo wreck is part of an important recreational and educational dive trail adjacent to the southern breakwater at North Coogee Marina,” he said.

“Making it a no-fishing zone will make it safer for divers and snorkellers as they enjoy the maritime history and diverse marine life.”
