Homegrown champions all
FOUR junior basketball teams from Lakeside and Cockburn were dubbed champions as the 2017 WA Basketball League season drew to a close on Sunday.
Lakeside Lightning’s U12-2 boys kicked off the success with a 51-42 win over Willetton on the back of a huge 14-point effort from Bryce Gimeno, who was ably supported by teammates Thomas Vink and Jonah Palelei who scored 10 points each.
It was a local derby in the U14-2 girls competition with Lakeside just taking the 54-51 win over Cockburn.
Isabel Taylor top scored for Lakeside with 26, while a huge 33 contribution from Cockburn’s Ashleigh Reidy was not enough to get her team over the line.
Lakeside’s U14-4 boys completed the triple, taking down Mandurah 53-49 thanks to a 20point effort from Sam McInnis.
Cockburn closed out the successful weekend with a 74-70 win over Lakeside.
Zachary Watkinson top scored for Cockburn with 25 while Lakeside’s Matthew Teale scored a game high 26 points.
Lakeside’s U12-3 boys and 162 boys went down in their respective grand finals.
Attadale’s Rowan Mackenzie was named the MVP of the School Sport Australia u18 boys Basketball Championship.
The championship winning Cockburn Cougars U18-2 team.
