Monster total for Cockburn

Fremantle Gazette - - SPORT -

ONE local team is in the box seat, while two are teetering on the edge of another loss in the opening South Metropolitan Cricket Association twoday game.

Playing away against the in-form Leeming Spartan, Cockburn won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision that proved fruitful almost immediately, as openers Chris Kercheval and James Matkovich scored 46 and 62 runs respectively.

Joshua Pescud came in at four to smash a huge 126 to help Cockburn to a total of 4313 at the end of day’s play.

Neither Phoenix nor East Fremantle were as successful with the bat, as both teams were knocked over for cheap totals.

In their match against the SJ Blues, East Fremantle were sent into bat and, with the exception of Ben Mustard’s 38, struggled to get any of their batsmen into the innings.

East Fremantle were knocked over for 111, a total the SJ Blues were already well on the way to chase down, having made their way to 0-56 at stumps.

Six players scored ducks as Phoenix slumped in their match against CBC.

The game was looking great for Phoenix, who made it to 104 runs before losing their first wicket, but the next nine came in a flurry and they managed just 40 more runs before they were knocked over completely for just 144.

Ben McGilvray was the only shining light, scoring an innings-high 63.

CBC had control of the game at stumps with a total of 0-59 in reply.

Round 3 action concludes on October 28, with all games restarting at 1pm.
