APPLECROSS teenager Zac Littlewood has been rewarded for a productive couple of years with a nomination in the Junior Sports Star category of February’s WA Sports Awards.

The Fremantle Sailing Club competitor took to the sport when he was just eight years old, rising through the ranks to secure a scholarship with the WA Institute of Sport (WAIS).

Littlewood (16) was also recently selected in the Australian Youth Team to contest the World Junior Championships in the United States in July.

“I am honoured and proud to be shortlisted,” he said of his nomination.

“It’s obviously great to be acknowledged for my results over the past year.”

Along the way he has competed and thrived at several youth competitions.

“I went back to the Youth Worlds in late August last year, where I got 10th overall and ranked second in the Under17 field of nearly 280 youth boys from over 40 countries,” he said.

“I also competed in the Netherlands last August at the Open Laser Radial World Championships, where I was the youngest competitor and achieved a bronze medal.”

The wins do not stop there, with Littlewood recently claiming the 2018 Australian and Oceania Championships in Queensland.

“It was a result of all the hard work and support from my family, coaches, WAIS and various other people, including my mentors, yacht clubs, sponsors and the financial grants that allow me to go these events and compete,” he said.

“I’m going into Year 12 this year, so while juggling school the aim is to compete overseas at another youth worlds.”

Award winners will be announced at Optus Stadium on February 8.
