Prison time a top experience
FREMANTLE Prison has been nominated to be one of the ‘7 Wonders of Australia’.
The prison was one of 10 iconic WA sites to be nominated for the Experience Oz campaign, which asks Australians of voting age to elect from a shortlist of 50 iconic Australian natural sites, landmarks and architectural icons.
Fremantle Prison director Paula Nelson said it was exciting for the prison to be nominated.
“To be included on a list which includes the best tourism sites Australia has to offer is great recognition for the prison, Fremantle and WA,” she said.
“We hope the people of WA are as excited as we are.”
Ms Nelson said it would be an honour to be included on the list.
“We’d love to be able to represent WA on such a national platform and hopefully it would encourage visitors, both locally, nationally and abroad, to visit and experience what the prison has to offer,” she said.
This nomination follows the prison being given a gold medal win for Cultural Tourism at the Australian Tourism Awards.
Public voting is now open and closes, Sunday October 7.
