Survey reveals a skate divide
A CITY of Cockburn-helmed survey has laid bare the polarising views on a potential skate park in Aubin Grove.
The survey found while a majority of respondents supported the addition of a skate park within the suburb, more than a third of the residents quizzed were firmly against any such plans.
The survey gave a choice of Radiata Park or two locations at the nearby Aubin Grove Oval and while Radiata was clearly the most popular, almost as many respondents went for the option that rejected building a skate park in the suburb at all.
The survey revealed more than 63 per cent of respondents (184 of 290) wanted a skate park in Aubin Grove, with 41 per cent supporting
Radiata Park as the preferred location, but also more than 36 per cent who did not support the idea.
In total, only 14 more people voted for the Radiata Park option than the option against a skate park.
The survey results are due to be discussed at tonight’s council meeting, with a recommendation to note the preferred location of a skate park at Radiata Park and undertake a workshop with selected community members to explore potential designs along with other youth facilities.
According to the council report, the project page was visited 1290 times and there were 321 responses received through the online survey and submissions.
In addition to the survey, a petition containing 105 names was received in June requesting council to abandon plans to build a skate park at any location in Aubin Grove, although the City established at least 20 and possibly more of those signatories had also participated in the survey.
There are currently four skate parks within the City of Cockburn, including Atwell Skate Park, a 10-minute drive from the potential facility at Radiata Park. Others are in Bibra Lake, Coolbellup and Spearwood.
Cockburn’s Community, Sport and Recreation Facilities Plan 2018-2033 suggests a further four district level skate parks to accommodate the City’s projected population forecast by 2026.
The City previously created an Aubin Grove public open space reserve account with $610,000 set aside for Radiata Park to support a skate park, toilet facility and appropriate seating.
