Vocoding with the JDXA

-

How can I get a clearer, more intelligible vocoder sound on Roland’s huge super-synth? The JDXA has a great built-in vocoder that’s capable of excellent results. It can run either on the digital or analogue section (or both) and also be processed by the onboard effects too, so it’s very versatile. The first place to start is to plug in a decent mic. You can obtain great results using a humble SM57, but try condenser mics, which are more sensitive to the nuances in your speech. The following tips can also be applied to most vocoders for improving tone and intelligibility…

?? ?? For added clarity, try a two-pole filter to let through more high end, and use the resonance to focus certain frequencies if required. Add in some white noise for even better intelligibility. Then process the result with the onboard compressor effect...

?? ?? Use an equal mix of saw wave on Osc 1 and a pulse wave on Osc 2. Experiment with the pulse width until you get a nice clear and solid tone when vocalising and playing. Go into the vocoder menu and experiment with the different modes (sharp, soft etc).
