In The Studio With… Walter Merziger

-

“The studio was at the Milastraße in Berlin. We were using Digidesign’s Pro Tools on a G4, and we had the next generation of Pro Tools on a G5. At the time you had to use the ESB Bridge to get the TDM sounds together with VSTs.

“It was a different time. The plugin world was quite new. We would use a lot of freeware or cheap ones. The In White Rooms bassline riff was actually from Computer Music magazine’s freeware plugin, CM101.

“Then we used the Alpha plugin from LinPlug, and Albino 2 from Rob Papen, and a lot of the daHornet.

“As you can see, they are simple, with no effects unit or anything. We really tried to get the sound right, and not overproduce it with reverbs and delays and everything, which is why we used these really simple plugins with just filter and LFO and envelope.

“Probably the only bit of outboard equipment we used on the album was a Roland SVC-350 Vocoder.”
