In the studio with Utah Saints

-

Tim: “The studio was Utah Central in Leeds. That’s where we recorded everything except the Edwin Starr vocal, which we did at Strongroom with Paul Epworth.

“Everything was still on MIDI, and we used the Atari for controlling everything. We had a big Studiomaster desk. It had 48 channels, which doubled up to 96. Rather than patch-baying it we just wired everything in and left it.

“We had the 909 wired up. We had the Akai 3200 sampler in there. We just had everything up and running all the time. We found that an easier way of working. We also had a DigiTech Vocalist, Korg 01/W, and a Korg Prophecy keyboard.

“We’d do a track then go to the train station and put the DAT on the Red Star at 8pm and it’d arrive in London the next morning. We’d get a call in the afternoon with the label saying, ‘Maybe just change a hi-hat?’. When you talk to people about it now, they have no idea [laughs].”
