Relay For Life
A sea of purple will be engulfing Castle Hill Showground on Saturday, 19th May for the 17th Hills Relay For Life event.
More than 105 teams, including nine high schools, have already signed up to take part in this year’s major community gathering which raises funds for cancer research and Cancer Council support programs.
The 24-hour event kicks off at 9.30am on Saturday, 19th May with the first lap set aside for cancer survivors and carers.
There is a packed program of activities on the day aimed at the whole family including entertainment on the main stage, games and competitions for primary students and teenagers, sideshows, stalls and more.
This year’s new inclusions feature a Slip, Slop, Slap, Slide relay race for youngsters and a Relay Hat and BROllie parade.
MC for the day is Gareth McCray from 2CH.
The candlelight ceremony of hope will start at 6pm.
There will be night time entertainment plus a silent disco. Sunday’s relay dog day starts at 7.30am. Relayers can register their dog for $5 and receive a relay bandana.
Michelle Sollom, chairwoman of the community organising committee, said:
“There is always such a great atmosphere at the Hills Relay. I think people realise that despite the name it is not a relay race but a chance to walk the track with friends, family and colleagues to make a difference to the cancer story.”
”It’s a day all generations can get involved. Our team is like many others, my children walk with their grandparents.
“The evening candlelight ceremony is an especially poignant time of reflection for my family, as we join with others to honour and remember the lives of loved ones we have lost to cancer.
“Ultimately, we are all Relaying for a cancer free future.”.
