Grand Theft Auto V

Heist to see you again

Games Master - - UPFRONT -

There’s a reason Rockstar’s crime sandbox is currently second in the sales chart, despite being five years old. That reason is GTA Online, the multiplayer component that lets you run wild across Los Santos with scores of other players. If you’ve been out of the game for a while, Heists are the biggest addition, a series of multi-part raids and robberies. Pull them off and the payouts are massive, letting you buy your way into the high life of swanky apartments and luxury yachts. For those wanting to keep their feet on terra firma, the Bikers update throws you into a leathered-up road gang. Craziest is Cunning Stunts, a series of surreal races adding stomachchurning loops, rat runs, and rings of fire.

As in life, you’ll need a chunk of change to afford the fun stuff, and that requires hard work grinding jobs for pay. Take Gunrunners, a military-focussed update in which the cheapest underground bunker costs a cool million. To GTA’s credit, you can pay for everything with in-game currency, but the slow rate of accumulation will push you towards forking over real money. Still, with weekly updates offering new events, store discounts, and double XP weekends, it’s worth returning to decide whether you want to make the commitment – or simply to see how much devastation you can cause.
