2D or not 2D
How Mario’s taps into his ace 8-bit roots
Odyssey may be made up from a plethora of expertly designed sandbox worlds, but the game also does an excellent job of using 2D space. Most kingdoms you encounter during the galaxy-roaming journey house warp pipes that will transform Mario into his former 8-bit self. The resulting side-scrolling sections look fantastic contrasted against the luscious 3D environments, and their inclusion shows that despite the advance of technology, Nintendo has never forgotten its icon’s beloved platforming roots.
