Strawberry These berries are ready to pick 4–6 weeks after flowers appear. For the sweetest flavour, pick fruit when fully red. Check plants every couple of days to harvest fruit that is ready. Snip the stem with scissors to avoid damaging the fruit or the plant.

Asparagus Harvest new asparagus spears when they reach 15–20cm long. Snap or cut them with a sharp knife at soil level or just below, being careful not to disturb smaller neighbouring shoots. Harvest through spring, then allow ferny shoots to grow through summer to build up energy for next year.

Turnip Harvest at any size, starting with tender baby turnips as young as 5–6 weeks. Don’t let them get too big or they turn woody. The leafy tops, or ‘turnip greens’, can be enjoyed as a leafy green vegetable.
