Jetta ready, here it comes

FOR those in the know the 147kW Jetta is, or was, the equivalent of the Golf GTI, but with a boot.
It has the same engine but not quite the same level of specification as the GTI, although the 147kW engine has now been superseded by the more powerful sixth generation Golf.
Still, the Jetta is bigger than you might think and the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine remains pretty sharp.
The Jetta 147TSI is priced from $38,990 plus on road costs.
The 2.0-litre produces 147kW of power at 5100 revs and 280Nm of torque from 1800 revs.
It is equipped as standard with Volkwagen’s acclaimed six-speed DSG gearbox (not the dry clutch seven-speed unit) which delivers quick changes and better fuel economy.
Talking about economy, it’s officially rated at 7.8 litres/100km (we were running on empty with 665km on the clock at 7.4 litres/ 100km).
Note it has a 55-litre tank and takes premium grade 95 RON unleaded.
Sports suspension is standard on this model (15mm lower) and it is fitted with 17 inch alloys and lower profile 225/45 tyres.
Performance from the turbocharged engine is sharp, the car steers and handles well— but it simply lacks the excitement of the GTI.
The dash from 0-100km/h takes a brisk 7.2 seconds. rear combined with a graphical ‘‘Optical’’ parking system.
A new choice of trims give the range an attractive update and are combined with a new steering wheel and revised instrument cluster.
Dual zone air is part of the package as is a 10 speaker, six-stack CD based sound system with an AUX input.
But you don’t get full leather for this price nor do you get Bluetooth which will cost you extra. Tthe latter should be standard.
Interestingly, for around the same price, you can get a Skoda Octavia RS with the same engine.
Nice car. Not as ostentatious as the GTI which is not necessarily a bad thing. Plenty of room for four adults, and a bloody big boot to go with it.
Jetta has full safety equipment including six airbags, stability control and anti-lock brakes.
