Dashing Count Alexei Orloff ( Richard Greene, above), an overnight favourite of Catherine the Great ( Binnie Barnes), travels to Venice on her behalf to abduct Elizabeth Tarakanova ( Valentina Cortese) who has been laying claim to the throne. Credible performances from the leading characters prove to be the only saving grace in this largely forgettable low-budget tale. Superfi cial romantic scenes between Greene and Cortese as well as a mediocre script ensure few moments of suspense or excitement. The Italian locations, especially in Venice, make some of the viewing easy on the eye, but the overall experience is of unfulfilled potential.
