Silly – like most of his films – this is Adam Sandler’s facetiously slack-jawed take on Frank Capra’s 1936 classic Mr Deeds Goes to Town. He plays Longfellow Deeds, adored pizzeria vendor of Mandrake Falls with aspirations as a greeting-card scribe. Somehow the lovable do-gooder inherits $ 40 billion, inviting a circus of attention, including the affections of a TV journo ( Winona Ryder). John Turturro scores the lion’s share of laughs as Deeds’ peculiar butler, and The O. C.’ s Peter Gallagher has a ball as the devious chairman out to fleece Deeds.
