An emotional semi- autobiographical tale about “the race the stops a nation” from director Simon Wincer ( Phar Lap). Based on the true events behind the 2002 Melbourne Cup, when Damien Oliver rode Media Puzzle to victory, just two weeks after his brother, jockey Jason Oliver, was killed while horse racing – the same fate that claimed the life of their father. Critics pointed to its “soapy” feel and a lack of tension between characters. But it still comes out in front as a head- versus- heart drama, with good performances from local stars Stephen Curry, Daniel MacPherson, Brendan Gleeson and Jodi Gordon.

Out in front: Stephen Curry plays jockey Damien Oliver.
