Kathryn Stockett’s best- selling book is the platform for this moving work set in 1960s Mississippi. Directed by Tate Taylor, the story is based on the lives of three women from very different backgrounds who break all societal rules to start a secret writing project, bonding them as friends forever. With powerful performances from Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer as the unlikely sisterhood, the courageous characters deliver a punchy statement about the Civil Rights era by countering the prominent racial divide with strength, humour and hope. Stone deserves special mention as society girl and unwitting revolutionary Skeeter.
