David’s jolly good gig

He’s usu­ally belt­ing out a tune on Christ­mas Eve, but this year sees David Camp­bell tak­ing on a new role at Vi­sion Aus­tralia’s Car­ols by Can­dle­light. He speaks with Guy Davis about the night be­fore Christ­mas.

Singer, en­ter­tainer and TV pre­sen­ter David Camp­bell has been a fa­mil­iar face for view­ers of Vi­sion Aus­tralia’s Car­ols by Can­dle­light, air­ing Christ­mas Eve on Nine, for over a decade now.

But this year sees Camp­bell take it to the next level, with the Morn­ings pre­sen­ter co- host­ing the event along­side To­day’s Lisa Wilkin­son.

This 76th year of the much- loved event has sev­eral Car­ols peren­ni­als tak­ing the stage – Ma­rina Prior, De­nis Wal­ter, Sil­vie Pal­adino, David Hob­son, Tim Camp­bell and An­thony Callea ( cel­e­brat­ing his 10th year as a Car­ols per­former) are among the vet­er­ans.

But there will also be some new faces en­ter­tain­ing the crowd at Mel­bourne’s Sid­ney Myer Mu­sic Bowl, not to men­tion the many view­ers around the coun­try watch­ing at home.

Sev­eral singers from the net­work’s pop­u­lar tal­ent quest The Voice will be part of the line- up, in­clud­ing Rachael Leah­car, Steve Clisby, Luke Kennedy, Dar­ren Per­ci­val and this year’s win­ner Har­ri­son Craig.

“Of course he would be!” Camp­bell said of Craig. “He’s a great ad­di­tion be­cause he’s a real sweet­heart and such a great singer, so he’ll be a crowd favourite.
