David’s jolly good gig
He’s usually belting out a tune on Christmas Eve, but this year sees David Campbell taking on a new role at Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight. He speaks with Guy Davis about the night before Christmas.
Singer, entertainer and TV presenter David Campbell has been a familiar face for viewers of Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight, airing Christmas Eve on Nine, for over a decade now.
But this year sees Campbell take it to the next level, with the Mornings presenter co- hosting the event alongside Today’s Lisa Wilkinson.
“I’ve been doing Carols on and off since I first did
( the popular stage show in which he portrayed
Iiconic Aussie rocker Johnny O’Keefe) and it’s always been a highlight of my year whenever I’ve done it as a performer,” Campbell said.
“So to be on this side of it, it’s just great.”

And she loves Christmas just as much as I do ... maybe even a little bit more.”
This 76th year of the much- loved event has several Carols perennials taking the stage – Marina Prior, Denis Walter, Silvie Paladino, David Hobson, Tim Campbell and Anthony Callea ( celebrating his 10th year as a Carols performer) are among the veterans.
But there will also be some new faces entertaining the crowd at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl, not to mention the many viewers around the country watching at home.
Several singers from the network’s popular talent quest The Voice will be part of the line- up, including Rachael Leahcar, Steve Clisby, Luke Kennedy, Darren Percival and this year’s winner Harrison Craig.
“Of course he would be!” Campbell said of Craig. “He’s a great addition because he’s a real sweetheart and such a great singer, so he’ll be a crowd favourite.
