In 1984, little boys everywhere were devotees of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and Boy ( James Rolleston), a loveable 11- year old living in a small New Zealand town, is no exception. Boy, who lives with his grandmother, little brother Rocky and an assortment of abandoned cousins, is also crazy about his absent dad, who is imagined in turn as a war hero, a samurai and a deep- sea diver. But when Boy’s father Alamein ( writer and director Taika Waititi) comes home after a stint in jail, his son must confront the reality of who his father is: a petty criminal with visions of grandeur. It’s a wonderful balance of heartbreak and hilarity. Stick around for the credits.
