Tuesday DINNER FOR ONE

Geelong Advertiser - TV Guide - - PROGRAMS -

SBS ONE, 7.15pm

As much as fireworks and hangovers are a part of New Year celebrations, so too is this favourite, screened every year on SBS. Recorded in 1963, Dinner for One is a 20- minute play about the elderly Miss Sophie ( May Warden) and her butler James ( Freddie Frinton) as they celebrate her 90th birthday. As Miss Sophie has outlived all her friends, the increasingly drunk James poses as all her guests so she doesn’t have to spend her birthday alone. With different drinks for each course and a toast to friends long gone, James flounders and falls about with increasing exuberance, while a lion rug challenges his balancing skills. While it may be old- school slapstick comedy, it never grows old.
