Mum’s the word
Fans of Seven’s How I Met Your Mother are finally … well, meeting the mother. Guy Davis learns about this important character from the actress playing her, Cristin Milioti.
For years now, the Seven sitcom How I Met Your Mother has been teasing its viewers with the secret implicit in the show’s title.
Ted Mosby ( Josh Radnor) has had his share of romantic encounters and misadventures over the show’s run … but have any of the women who have crossed his path actually been the mother of his future children?
Well, at the end of How I Met Your Mother’s eighth season, her identity was finally revealed.
Acclaimed stage actress Cristin Milioti was cast as “the mother” ( the character’s name has not yet been revealed).
But she had to keep the news of her big television break a secret, not only from the audience desperate to learn more about the character but even those closest to her.
OK, so she did tell her mother and her boyfriend. But she made them swear to keep the news to themselves.
“My job and financial future literally depended on it,” Milioti said.
“If anyone found out, there was probably a possibility of them firing me and re- shooting those episodes.”
Landing the role itself was a very cloak- and- dagger kind of process, with How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas amount of paperwork Milioti had to sign even at this stage made the nature of the role pretty clear.
“I signed, like, a Russian novel’s worth of confidentiality agreements,” she laughed. “So I had my sneaking suspicions.”
Oh, and the fact that is meant to be, but she says she’s been given a bit of leeway to put her own stamp on the character.
“I definitely keep things in mind, the little hints and factoids that have been dropped about the character,” she said.
As How I Met Your Mother makes its way through its ninth and final season, Milioti says her character will be woven into the show’s storyline.
“So it’s not just like you meet the mother and then, done,” she said. “You get to know her. I’m getting to know her.”
