Friday DAVID STARKEY’S MUSIC AND MONARCHY
SBS ONE, 8.35pm
Music buffs will love this new series, where renowned historian Dr David Starkey reveals how British music was shaped by its monarchy. It’s not a connection many people are aware of, so it is quite surprising to see exactly what the monarchy has done for music. In tonight’s first episode, Starkey delves into the lives of kings who were also composers – Henry V and Henry VIII – and the “golden age” of English music they presided over. He also discovers how the military and religious ambitions of England’s monarchy made its music the envy of Europe, and then brought it to the brink of destruction.
