“The idea with work­ing with a dif­fer­ent co- writer for each episode in the first sea­son was to make sure each date felt and sounded fresh.

“And my first in­cli­na­tion was ac­tu­ally to get them all back but then I re­mem­bered the rea­son why we had dif­fer­ent writ­ers in the first place.”

Hel­liar says some of the char­ac­ters from the first sea­son of It’s a Date will re­turn in the new episodes, but for the most part they will ex­plore the plea­sures and pit­falls of the dat­ing scene through new faces.

“It’s been a nice bal­ance to have,” he said of jug­gling his var­i­ous gigs. “It was another con­sid­er­a­tion go­ing into The Project, mak­ing sure they could all ac­com­mo­date each other. And it seems like they will.” The Project, week­nights on Ten, 6.30pm
