Our modern cities are relatively clean and orderly places, but not so long ago many of the world’s most iconic places were more like a scene from a horror movie. Tonight, historian Dan Snow lifts the lid on the cesspit that was Paris 200 years ago. Today, the River Seine is a place of romance, but back then a stroll along its shores might have had you gagging as it was filled with the waste of the entire city – including animal fat, dog poo and raw sewage. Even in the opulent Versailles Palace, appearances were deceptive, with its stately corridors commonly used as lavatories.
