Our modern cities are relatively clean and orderly places, but not so long ago many of the world’s most iconic places were more like a scene from a horror movie. Tonight, historian Dan Snow lifts the lid on the cesspit that was Paris 200 years ago. Today, the River Seine is a place of romance, but back then a stroll along its shores might have had you gagging as it was filled with the waste of the entire city – including animal fat, dog poo and raw sewage. Even in the opulent Versailles Palace, appearances were deceptive, with its stately corridors commonly used as lavatories. You’ll be thanking your lucky stars for modern plumbing practices after viewing.
