GO!, Monday, 9.30pm, M ( 1999)

David O. Russell’s take on the first Gulf War is filled with wit, black humour, intelligence and playfulness. George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Spike Jonze and Ice Cube ( pictured) play US soldiers stationed in Iraq in the aftermath of the conflict, who go AWOL to find Saddam’s hidden treasure. Sidelined by Iraqi civilians in desperate need of help, their mission proves arduous. Russell pulls no punches in questioning US intentions in the region and putting a human face on the victims of warfare. The narrative – a riff on The Treasure of the Sierra Madre – never veers off track and innovative camerawork adds a surreal dimension to the adventure. A knockout.
