GO!, Tuesday, 9.30pm, M ( 1994)
Toni Collette is Muriel, desperate to be respected and married like her catty girlfriends and maybe one day escape Porpoise Spit. On a whim and dad’s blank cheque, she goes in search of her dream, finding happiness and surprise. A study of values and dysfunction, the magic in Muriel’s Wedding lies with her family, cleverly cast by first- time director P. J. Hogan who elicits top performances from Bill Hunter as the philandering father, and Gabby Millgate as the couch potato sister whose “You’re terrible Muriel!” line is priceless. Rachel Griffiths ( above left with Collette) shines as Muriel’s knowing best friend.
