Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew enrols in high school for this sprightly romantic comedy. Julia Stiles ( pictured) plays the shrewish older sister who, under dad’s rules, must have a boyfriend ( enter Heath Ledger) in order for her younger sister ( Larisa Oleynik) to start dating. There are nice allusions, particularly the various name references ( Padua High School, Verona and Stratford each pop up), as well as some charming quirks, including the late Ledger’s spontaneous crooning and the oversexed guidance counsellor. There may be 10 things to hate about this film, but you’ll have trouble finding them.
