GO!, Monday, 9.30pm, AV15+ ( 2010)

Director David O. Russell ( Three Kings) scores a knock- out with this original entry in the boxing film genre. Welterweight boxer Dicky Eklund made local history in the working- class Massachusetts city of Lowell in the 1970s by sending Sugar Ray Leonard to the mat. Later, struggling with drug addiction and running petty hustles, Dicky ( an almost emaciated Christian Bale) trained his half- brother Micky Ward ( Mark Wahlberg) to have a crack at a world welterweight championship. With a stellar cast including Amy Adams as Micky’s girlfriend Charlene and Melissa Leo as his domineering mother, this true story of pluck and determination is not easy viewing, but definitely a winner.

Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale.
