NINE, Friday, 11pm, M ( 2004)

Stepping out of his comfort zone as he did in 2002’ s Punch- Drunk Love, lowbrow comedian Adam Sandler ( pictured) returned to another dramatic setting for this curiously titled film about poor communication. Sandler plays a harried restaurateur whose neurotic, ex- corporate- high- flier wife ( Téa Leoni) hires Mexican nanny Flor ( Paz Vega). Despite not speaking a word of English, Flor quickly deduces just what a dysfunctional family she has fallen in with. Writer- director James L. Brooks mixes comedy and drama exceptionally well, if not quite as deftly as in his previous effort As Good as it Gets.
