LOST IN TRANSLATION
ELEVEN, Friday, 10.05pm, PG ( 2003)
Stamping herself as a talent to rival her great father, Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia Coppola turned to Tokyo. In a role made for his brand of comic pathos, Bill Murray plays a has- been film star in the Japanese capital for a publicity job. Cooped up in a hotel, he forms a bond with the beautiful wife ( Scarlett Johansson, pictured) of a photographer. Incorporating Japanese life to dreamy effect, Coppola wallpapers the setting with lush cinematography and an ambient soundtrack to capture the hazy conscious state of the two displaced souls.
