Matthew McConaughey has ditched the films of yore where his abs featured more than his acting prowess and fills the role of dodgy LA lawyer Mick Haller with ease in this adaptation of the Michael Connelly novel. Conducting most of his work from the backseat of his Lincoln car, a big job falls Haller’s way when a rich kid ( Ryan Phillippe) is accused of bashing a prostitute. Of course, the case only brings more trouble to Haller as a parade of shady characters – from bikie gangs to a quirky private eye ( William H. Macy) – complicate the scenario. Solid acting from all involved elevate this effort above the inconsequential screen filler it easily could have become.
