SCENT OF A WOMAN
ELEVEN, Friday, 8.30pm, M ( 1992)
Ageing like a fine wine, Al Pacino ( pictured with Gabrielle Anwar) pours his heart into a potent portrayal of a blind army colonel at odds with the world and his past. The alcoholic, irritable colonel is given a “minder” over the Thanksgiving holiday – wide- eyed student Charlie ( Chris O’Donnell), who has problems of his own. Pacino racked up his first Oscar for this, but perhaps it was a sentimental vote more than anything – he killed ’ em in Carlito’s Way and in Dog Day Afternoon 20 years earlier.
