Calling card for new jobs

Council postcard plan for bright ideas to overcome work obstacles

- CLAIRE MARTIN

THE City of Greater Geelong plans to use postcards to help develop strategies to boost employment in the region.

The postcard project, set to launch on Monday, will see 2000 cards delivered to Geelong residents on which they’re being asked to finish the sentence “I could get a job if . . . ”.

The council’s community life general manager Linda Quinn said the City wanted to know of any issues that might be preventing people from joining the workforce.

“We really want honest feedback from people of all ages to find out how we can assist in linking people with jobs,” she said.

“If issues such as transport, child care or qualifications are a factor, we want to work with you to find solutions.”

The $1500 project, initiated and funded by the City of Greater Geelong, is a collaboration with Barwon Network of Neighbourhood Centres and G21 Region Opportunities for Work (GROW).

Ms Quinn said data collected on the post cards would be shared with the G21 and GROW for “consideration in their strategies”.

“We are sending out 2000 postcards and hope to receive high engagement,” she said.

Residents have two weeks to respond to the campaign and the council will then collect the postcards from dropoff points that are listed on the card.
