Holland in dark over selection

- RUSSELL GOULD

DUMPED Test wicketkeeper Peter Nevill has been told he is on standby if there are any mishaps in India, but 38 Sheffield Shield wickets this season have not earned Victorian spinner Jon Holland a similar heads-up.

Holland, 29, who took five wickets in two Tests in Sri Lanka last year, is yet to hear from selectors about why he is not in India now.

He was injured at the wrong time, missing the Big Bash League with a heel injury as selectors mulled over the squad for India.

But he had taken 27 of his 38 Shield wickets before the Big Bash break — in only five games — and would have appreciated a call to explain why he was not considered.

“Still haven’t heard from them, and I’m not holding my breath,” Holland said.

“A part of me thinks that maybe I should have got a call just to let me know how I’m going and what they are thinking, or how was I actually going with my injury and would I be able to play after Big Bash.”

Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson, the spinners chosen to join Test incumbents Nathan Lyon and Steve O’Keefe in India, have taken 26 Shield wickets between them this summer.
