Premiers still searching for new mentor

Geelong Advertiser - - SPORT - ALEX OATES CDFL

IT’S the plum job that no one seems to want.

Back-to-back reigning CDFL premier Birregurra will ramp up its search for a senior coach after a fruitless campaign thus far.

“It’s pretty quiet,” Saints president Mick Paddock said.

“Ideally we’d like an external playing coach and we’ve set our standards high after winning a couple of flags.

“We’ve had a couple of advertisements but not a lot of interest outside.”

Having won the past two senior flags in the CDFL, and running within one point of a reserves premiership in September, Birregurra is trying to find coaches at the moment, but I just didn’t think we’d have this much trouble, to be honest. “It’s really bizarre.”

Star midfielder Andrew Kelly has put his hand up as an assistant, but work commitments mean he can’t commit to the senior role.

“We haven’t had many incoming calls, but I’ve made quite a few inquiries,” he said.

“We’ve got our eyes and ears on the ground in Geelong, but if we can’t find someone at this meeting, we’ll leave it another month.

“We’ll just chip away to see if a name pops up. It’s not a compromise as much, but it’s a plan B to appoint someone from within the club.”

Paddock said the job was “ready-made” for a prospective coach. “We’ve only lost two players from last year and we’ve got about seven coming in from the under-17s and reserves that couldn’t get into the side last season because it was too strong,” he said.

“For a coach, there will be no recruitment component. There will be no black book, so unless a coach was insistent that he had a group of players that wanted to follow him, he wouldn’t have to do any recruitment otherwise.

“They can walk into a ready-made side and a strong side. All the Geelong boys have committed to the club, we’ve got brand new facilities, a new ground and our brand new netball courts will go down in a month or so.

“It’s a family club with a great culture and we’ve got huge junior numbers.”
