Gita hits islands
FIJIAN authorities were yesterday working to establish contact with some remote southern islands after powerful Cyclone Gita took down communications, though the Pacific Island nation’s most populated centres avoided serious damage. Radio Australia said villagers on Ono-i-Lau reported that crops and several houses had been destroyed, but there had been no reports of injuries. The category-4 cyclone had caused extensive damage in Samoa and American Samoa before hitting Tonga hard on Monday night. Forecast tracking had the cyclone moving west then south and avoiding New Caledonia.
