Gita hits is­lands

FI­JIAN au­thor­i­ties were yes­ter­day work­ing to es­tab­lish con­tact with some re­mote south­ern is­lands af­ter pow­er­ful Cy­clone Gita took down com­mu­ni­ca­tions, though the Pa­cific Is­land na­tion’s most pop­u­lated cen­tres avoided se­ri­ous dam­age. Ra­dio Aus­tralia said vil­lagers on Ono-i-Lau re­ported that crops and sev­eral houses had been de­stroyed, but there had been no re­ports of in­juries. The cat­e­gory-4 cy­clone had caused ex­ten­sive dam­age in Samoa and Amer­i­can Samoa be­fore hit­ting Tonga hard on Mon­day night. Fore­cast track­ing had the cy­clone mov­ing west then south and avoid­ing New Cale­do­nia.
