Double-header trouble

- RYAN REYNOLDS BIG V BASKETBALL

CORIO Bay ends the weekend with empty pockets, unable to secure a win in its Saturday/Sunday doubleheader.

The Stingrays went down to Werribee Devils 83-91 at home on Saturday, then suffered a 102-70 loss to powerhouse Ringwood Hawks on the road yesterday.

The loss to the Devils is the tough one to take, with the Stingrays getting its fair share of chances throughout the night.

“We were unlucky at home on Saturday night. I certainly felt we were the better team on the night,” Stingrays coach Paul Hutchison said.

“Just Werribee did a better job getting to the foul line a little bit more than us and made the most of their opportunities when they got there.

“We were missing easy ones and it ended up biting us at the end.”

Hutchison said he was happy with the way his team competed against Ringwood.

“We went in at half time about 10 down. The first quarter we were right in it.

“They came out after half time and put a 16-nil run on us and that was pretty much the game. We won the rest of the game from that point onwards but the damage was al- ready done.

“It was the back end of the double header against the best team in the competition (so it took its toll).”

Christopher Eichler was again huge in both games with 13 points against the Hawks and 22 against the Devils.

Jackson Bentley, six defensive rebounds and 11 points, also caught the eye in Saturday night’s loss.

Steve Wiasak was on fire early, giving Corio Bay a good start against Ringwood and Joel McFall stood up too.

“Chris and Griff (Griffin Errey) had to play decent minutes against big bodies. We just can’t match them for size at the moment,” Hutchison said. “It was evident on the scoreboard and it was evident on the paint with their rebounds. Chris just battled hard all game.”

Import Julius Brooks will bring some height relief for Hutchison’s men, arriving in Australia today.
