- OLIVIA SHYING

HOMICIDE detectives are investigating the mystery death of a person whose body was found in a parked car at North Shore yesterday.

Police stumbled across the body while responding to reports of a burglary at a Seaforth St property just after 11am.

The dog squad combed the area as forensic police gathered evidence in and around a blue station wagon at the scene.

THE homicide squad is investigating the mystery death of a person whose body was found in a parked car at North Shore yesterday.

Police stumbled across the body while responding to reports of a burglary at a Seaforth St property just after 11am.

While investigating detectives have not yet commented on the case, police media spokeswoman Belinda Batty said officers searched the area while probing the burglary.

“A search of the nearby area un- covered a deceased person in a parked vehicle on Sea Breeze Pde,” Ms Batty said.

Police have not said if they know the identity or sex of the deceased person or if they have any suspects relating to the death. A spokesman confirmed the death was currently being treated as suspicious.

Dozens of police worked in the area most of yesterday, with uniformed and non-uniformed officers blocking off roads and other intersections.

Nearby resident Ayla Norman said police began doorknocking shortly before noon.

“At about midday it all started unfolding,” Ms Norman said. “They (the police) were circling non-stop.”

She said police initially told residents they were looking for a missing person.

Ms Norman told the Geelong Advertiser she witnessed a police helicopter, carrying the K9 unit, land at Corio Bay and said officers began searching nearby properties.

She saw officers search an industrial shed in Seaforth St located hundreds of metres from where the body was found. It is not known if the shed was the same property where the possible burglary occurred.

“We then saw police go into a property and walk out with plastic containers,” she said.

The property and street was taped off for the rest of the day.

About 5pm yesterday, police removed an SES tent which had been covering a dark blue station wagon. Detectives were seen taking photographs of a number of items inside the car, including a roll of taped-up fabric or carpet, but could not confirm if the body was found in that ve- hicle. Police have not released any details about the vehicle the deceased person was found in.

Ms Norman said she had lived in the area for about four years with her partner and young children. She said many mechanics and factory workers lived in the area which was “usually quiet”.

However, the young mother said she was not surprised to hear police were investigating a death and said “a lot happened” in North Shore.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
