SEIZURE MAY HAVE SPARKED CBD CRASH

-

POLICE believe a driver had a seizure in the moments before he crashed his car into the traffic lights at a prominent intersection in central Geelong yesterday morning.

The crash happened shortly before 9am at the corner of Ryrie and Moorabool streets.

The driver, a man in his early 20s, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Geelong hospital for treatment.

Police said his navy blue sedan was heading east on Ryrie St when the driver lost control and ploughed into the pole at the northwest corner of the intersection outside Cake Bar (formerly George’s Rug Clearance Centre).

An ambulance and police crew were called to the scene. Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the paramedics were called at 8.52am, and the male driver was treated for minor injuries. The man was conscious and breathing, but did have some injuries to his face. He was assessed and taken to Geelong hospital in a stable condition.

Police stayed at the scene directing traffic for four hours after the crash, and workmen were at the scene into the afternoon replacing the light pole.
