SOUTH Australian ace Brett Metcalfe has urged Geelong to get behind him tonight as he tries to knock teammate Justin Brayton off the winner’s podium.
The Penrite Honda teammates have finished 1-2 in the first two rounds of the Australian Supercross Championships, with Brayton boasting a maximum 50 points after back-to-back wins.
The 34-year-old American clearly remains the one to beat, after taking out the entire championship last season, but Metcalfe has his sights set on overthrowing his teammate.
“We’ve got to look out for the sponsors and do the right thing by our team, but ultimately it’s an individual sport,” said Metcalfe, who was out and about yesterday with a visit to Northern Bay College, where he handed out 40 tickets to tonight’s event.
“Even though the team supports us with everything that we need, it’s an individual race and I want to win this weekend.
“Next weekend is Adelaide, that’s home for me, so this race is really important for the championship and I want to get a win, that would be nice.”
But Metcalfe, 34, admitted knocking off Brayton would be no easy feat.
“I want to win, but he’s been really strong,” Metcalfe said.
“He’s riding fast, so he’s definitely difficult to beat, but I’ve got it in me. I know I can get it done, so hopefully this weekend is the one.
“We had a long motocross season and then going into supercross, it just feels good to get a couple of seconds. We’ve made some progress every week, just a little bit, and got a bit more practice under my belt, so this weekend I want to win.”
Metcalfe said Geelong provided the perfect arena to race supercross.
“Seeing the pictures, the stadium looks incredible and it’s great to see a supercross track in there, so it’s pretty awesome,” he said.
“The weather’s going to be beautiful for us, so I think it’s going to be an exciting night.
“Hopefully we get an awesome crowd turnout. I hear the numbers are already looking pretty good.”
