Hundreds caught in road blitz

-

POLICE nabbed more than 200 drivers flouting the law and risking their lives and the lives of others during the Melbourne Cup Carnival long weekend.

Across the Geelong and Surf Coast regions 206 drivers were detected disobeying the law during the four-day police road safety operation.

Along the Surf Coast police picked up seven drinkdrivers, eight unlicensed drivers and nabbed 53 drivers for speeding offences. In Geelong police apprehended two drink-drivers, two drugaffected drivers and handed out 77 speeding tickets.

Head of Road Policing Operations Superintendent John Fitzpatrick said the number of people putting themselves and others in serious danger was unacceptably high.

“Too many people think death and serious injury on our roads is something that happens to other people,” Mr Fitzpatrick said. “We all have a responsibility to do our best to arrive at our destination safely.”
