STARS ON THE RISE

- NATHANIEL POYNTON

GEELONG Baycats are hoping to unearth the next generation of stars as baseball fever grips the region.

With Geelong-Korea a week away from making its Australian Baseball League debut, the Baycats are hosting try-outs for their new little league summer baseball program.

The new five-team competition has launched at Geelong Baseball Centre.

The Baycats will select an All-Star team of 14 to compete at the Victorian Junior League State Championships in April next year.

Should the side win, it will progress to the national titles and potentially represent Australia at the Little League World series.

Geelong Baycats Little league head coach Larry Meager said there was “a lot of support from Greater Geelong” for the junior program.

The Baycats will run weekly skill sessions for juniors interested in having a crack at the game.

The sessions, run by the Geelong Baycats charter coach Mathew Zablan, will be on Wednesdays at 6pm and Sundays at 9.30am at the Waurn Ponds baseball complex.

Zablan formerly played for the Melbourne Aces and was the coach of the Baycats’ charter team for the 2017-2018 seasons.

With access to its own local charter, Geelong teams will no longer need to go to Melbourne to play their games in summer.
